Irish Currachs Returning to New York

On 1\16\2006 Monty O'Leary and I are back to building currachs together. If folks all chip in to get the funding, we will also build boats for crews in New York. Towards informing all about Currachs and Currach racing and rowing in New York, we are going to hold an event at the American Irish Hisotical Society on 12\19...
AMERICAN IRISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY
presents
“The Currach: from Saint Brendan to Today”
To close the year’s calendar, Lorcan Otway returns to the Society, this time to discuss the history of the ancient sailing vessel, the currach, including racing aspects in Ireland and in the United States. Two currachs were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Their hand-built replacements will be undertaken by Mr. Otway and the renowned builder Monty O'Leary of Maharees, Co. Kerry. In New York, currach racing has been on hiatus. However, it is being re-invigorated through the efforts of Mr. Otway and others of NY’s Quaker community, in memory of the Quaker aid to Ireland during the Famine. The evening will involve illustrations in slides and photographs. Previously, Mr. Otway has been at AIHS, hosting musician-educator Bill Ochs and lecturing on Ireland’s Travellers.
Monday, December 19th – 6:30 p.m.
